The End Of The Beginning

I've given it a whole lot of thought, much of it being expressed here over the last few months...and I feel like it's finally time that I move on. This will be my last post here on Vanity Girl. I've come to the realization that while I've grown a lot as a writer via this blog, I feel like it's time for a bit more refined outlet where I can still write, yet without all of the pressure of being a typical fashion blogger. I'm much more than that. I want to get back to my love of writing, and why I fell in love with it in the first place. I know you're probably thinking "WTF?" but this won't be the last that you see of me, because I've recently launched a new blog: Beyond The Boulevard. My vision for it is of much more substance than what I had to offer here, and I'm super excited to begin a new chapter of my life where I'm writing for the love of it and not out of the pressure of being something I'm not. Vanity Girl has helped me as a blogger, but I want to actually utilize my degree to excel as a writer, and delve into much more complex things that are beyond streetstyle and outfits--hence, BTB. lol.

I can't even really express how grateful I am for all of you who have roughed it out with me since I started Vanity Girl back in 2009. You all have been so influential, helpful, and amazing in this journey, and I can do nothing but say thank you! I hope that you will join me in my newest endeavors, as I hope to bring you more of my personal style, along with my own adventures and two cents here and there. So here's to new beginnings! Come along for the ride! God bless you! :)

The possibilities are endless, but if all else fails, I can pair a blazer with just about anything! So now I'm off to dig through my massive collection of clothes.

INSPIRATION: THE LAST DAYS OF SUMMER

With fall being just around the corner--despite the fact that the summer heat is still rearing its ugly head--it will soon be time to trade in that teeny weeny polka dot bikini for a fuzzy fur, faux of course. California is infamous for it's nowhere near freezing whether, yet I have hope that I'll be able to rock my favorite fall gear like all of you East Coasters out there. I don't mean to wish daunting weather on So Cal, but this summer has helped me to have a deep appreciation for those dreary winter months. I'd much rather be fashionably warm from layering my clothes than to be wearing barely anything and still sweat like a druggie having withdrawals. So in between time, I'll meander around in this awkward pre-fall season, mixing in ponchos and cool knits with denim cutoffs and maxis.

When spotting this editorial from StyleBy's summer issue--featuring the gorgeous Christine Loekkeboe, talented photographer Rickard Sund and stellar stylist Kattis Lindoff--I fell in love, as it is the epitome of merging together summer and fall in a totally effortless way.

In other news, I changed the look of the blog so I hope you guys like it! It was boring me for a while, but I finally figured out a way to freshen it up. And for those of you who have been sending me "good luck" emails in regards to the job hunt, I'm sure you'll be glad to know that I finally landed one! I guess that whole "If at first you don't succeed" saying works when you try try again more times than you can count! lol But all in all, it is a huge relief to be back to work again, and I can't thank you all enough for your support! The best has yet to come. ;)

I wish that there were more hours in the day! I haven't posted in ages, but I guess that ought to be a sign that I'm working hard. So here's a mini update. The online store is picking up, and there are tons of amazing projects and opportunities that have come my way that I can't wait to show you all! PURE NIRVANA

Despite the bipolar weather, this past weekend was pretty sweet. Kevin and I headed over to Downtown L.A. to share a vending booth with some of my photography friends at the Artwalk. Aside from the fact that a pedestrian got hit by a car that had jumped the curb, it was a pretty cool day. I made a nice chunk of change at my Urban Legends Vintage booth and had tons of fun in the meantime. If I wasn't on my business woman tip, I would have taken tons of pictures of all of the swaggerific guys and gals that came by. As for all of you So Cal fashion lovers, my store will have a booth at the Inland Empire's very own Funky Fresh Flea in Riverside. I'll keep you all updated with the deets, so be on the lookout!

SUMMER SUMMER SUMMERTIME

It has been a strenuous task trying to find clothes that are cool--in a fashionable and beat the heat sense.

I'm all for layering, but this summer heatwave that is currently scorching So Cal is trying its hardest to cramp my style. So as a tip for those of you who want to stay looking chic while not having to suffer from being drenched in sweat, I recommend pairing lightweight items with one another. This will make for awesome layering and will still leave you looking stylish. While sunscreen and plenty of water are both summer essentials, getting your hands on some colorful, airy items is a must this summer!

Graduating college is quite bittersweet. While there's the burden of student loans and "real world" pressure to land a good job, there is also a heightened sense of excitement within me for what is to come.

That dreaded mantra of a question, "What are you going to do now?", is all that I've been hearing

these past few weeks since my tassel switched over from the right to the left.

To be honest, I don't know what tomorrow holds.... and as stressful as this may be for some, I love it, because it leaves open the door of endless possibilities. The only blueprint of a plan that I have drafted is that I am moving to New York (pending my savings account significantly increases in the next few months). And from there, whatever happens happens.

In the meantime, I've been chilling. lol I haven't been completely idle, considering that I've been hunting for jobs like crazy. But my day-to-day has primarily been spent trying out new foods, reading, and working on the launch of my own online vintage boutique. So as of now, I'm just living. Taking things as they come and using all of this free time on my hands to do the things that I've been dying to do is truly liberating. No more all nighter study sessions, lengthy and seemingly senseless readings, and all of the other things that college students have hovering over them. So it is farewell to the routine-ridden quarters as a student and hello to the unpredictably innovative days as a graduate. :)

I love giving masculine pieces a feminine touch.

It's always cool to flirt with the gender boundaries when it comes to fashion--sex change surgeries, mmmm not so much.

This So Cal weather is constantly fluctuating, so I decided to do it up with the layering

and incorporate a few menswear-inspired pieces.

One of my biggest style/beauty/everything else inspirations is Solange Knowles, so you can imagine how excited I was to finally see her as Who What Wear's Girl of the Month! As a WWW intern, I got an early peak into the fashion closet to see all of the amazing Solange-inspired frocks, and I must say, I am very pleased with the selections of today's GOTM story!

No matter the scene, Solange always manages to turn heads. Whether rocking ethnocentric duds from Boxing Kitten, looking incredibly chic with a funky turban wrap--which has become her style staple and has caused a trend frenzy--or piling on layers that still show simplicity, Solange has got this entire fashion flair in the bag. She's extraordinarily daring and is a usual subject of high-brow critics....But you know what they say, if they're talking about you, you must be doing something right.

While the industry can tend to turn a blind eye to the concept of diversity and shut out people of color who are overflowing with creativity, it's so awesome to see a trendsetter like Solange be able to transcend all boundaries! It is 2011, so you would think that racial ignorance would be diminished by now, but sadly, it still rears its ugly head. However, I'm so glad that Who What Wear isn't all about the color of your skin, but is more obsessed with the funky clamor of one's closet! In this industry, fashion is what we all have in common, regardless of anything else, and I'm so relieved that I work for a company who embraces that! :)

THIS THING CALLED LIFE

For starters, I'd like to give a big HELLO to all of you new readers!!!!!

It wasn't until now that I actually realized I haven't posted anything in quite some time.

Online outlets like Twitter, Facebook, and even Blogger can cause us to get so caught up in the

"who has the most followers" hype that we miss the point of it all....that is, if there is actually a point. lol

I've noticed lately that the blogosphere has gradually shifted from my outlet of expression to a burden,

where the organic drive to post whatever inspires me or comes to mind seems to suddenly be irrelevant.

Writing has never been this way for me, which is why I guess I've been on a bit of a hiatus.

I needed some time to breathe, to collect my thoughts and not get sucked into the tech-obsessed world that is such a huge part of our culture.

As crazy as it may sound, I've actually noticed a lot of personal growth that has occurred

in this pull back from social media......and I like it. lol

I've had the opportunity to actually get things done!....even though my procrastination with homework is still a challenge I have yet to completely overcome.

I was surprised at the internal growth that resulted in me stepping away from my Macbook--and Blackberry.

The pressures surrounding the fact that I am graduating from college next month were the icing on the cake.

I've been searching like crazy to find a job, and have had no luck thus far.

But, optimism is key, which is why I've been strongly considering moving to NYC.

I'm in dyer need of a change of scenery.

Don't get me wrong: I love California.

But I don't want to be that bitter granny who regrets never making the ballsy move to the Big Apple.

If I have kids--and even grandkids--I want to have remarkable stories about my youthful ventures,

even if they're all tales of incredible failure; at least I can say that I did it! :)

So that's where I'm at right now, getting things in order and going for the gusto.

Stay along for the ride.

CALL ME IRRESISTIBLE: SPRING/SUMMER BEAUTY LOOKS FOR WOMEN OF COLOR

I've been wanting to try my hand at experimenting with color combos that have been dancing around in my head all Winter, and what better time to give them a try than amidst this amazing Cali weather! I've been anticipating buying some new beauty products--lipsticks, nail polishes, and eye shadows in particular. I've never been much of a glamazon when it comes to make-up because I've always felt it should enhance your beauty rather than define it. However, I've always been a fan of the fabulousness of it all.

As a young woman of color, it's hard to find shades that appeal to my dark skin tone. Although I like mainstream beauty editorials, I do believe that at times, they can be a bit unrealistic and unable to cross cultural boundaries. If you're just as obsessed with fashion magazines as I am, this lack of universal appeal can be depressing and irritating at the same time. lol Yet oddly enough, when I spotted this editorial from Harper's Bazaar Singapore, I felt as if the make-up artist snatched some of my ideas right out of by brain when I wasn't looking! lol Although the model, Rudi, is much more fairer skinned, her beauty looks are phenomenal and can work for women of all shades! Deep purples, bright pinks, and shimmery corals, all paired with sultry lux shades that vamp up the eyes. AAH! I can't wait to try them!!

HIDDEN ALLEYWAYS

After a long day of interning, I drove down this random alley in an effort to dodge the street traffic

and discovered this great spot for a quick photo op!

Although there were a few sketchy prowlers that made their way by me as my camera was snapping away,

I still managed to nab these awesome shots.

But once I caught a glimpse of the LAPD making their way toward me, I jumped in my car! lol

Not because I was afraid of them....but because I was afraid of hefty price of getting a ticket,

since L.A. cops are known for being sticklers about giving ridiculously priced fines for photography.

On Monday {March 21st}, I celebrated my 22nd birthday!

I truly appreciate all of your birthday wishes :)

NYFW FALL 2011: INTO THE WILD

NYFW takes a trip to the exotic.

Animal prints, tribal fabrics and colorful blends are my absolute favorite parts of what's in store for Fall 2011.

Though I've always wanted to take a trip to embark upon an African safari,

I don't mind settling for these eclectic runway looks in the meantime.

Proenza Schouler is hands down my favorite collection of the Fall 2011 season.

It says: Denise Huxtable goes on an African excursion.

Although I tried not to showcase every single look from the collection, I couldn't help the fact that every look was amazing! lol

Designers Jack McCollough & Lazaro Hernandez prove themselves to be rising legends in the industry,

consistently creating fashion that is fresh, funky, and flawless!

Though a bit on the dark and dangerous end of things, Felder Felder's collection brings a different meaning to the word wild.

Jewel tones, abstract-printed leather, and colored fur on just about everything makes for an interesting touch.

For some reason, chic yet edgy witch doctor kept coming to mind...

I LOVE THIS COLLECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I literally let out a scream of joy when coming across each look!

Who cares about rain, snow, and sleet in the winter when you can look this stunning?!

Sass & Bide did one hell of a job, and I'm not only referring to the crazy tie-die--which by the way

puts those elementary DIY t-shirt projects of mine to shambles.

Though it seemed a bit Boxing Kitten-ish,

I'm a huge fan of every single piece.

From the spiked necklaces to the coned hats, from the tiered scallops to the funky aboriginal prints..

I adore it all!

I thing the glitz and glam is one of the greatest things about being a girl.

If anybody knows how to jazz up a gown, sequins, or a fuzzy fur,

it would be a woman.

Naheem Khan is the perfect designer to be worn dawning down the red carpet.

Elegance is a true understatement in his collection of rosette, silk, and bead embellished gowns.

I'm in pure awe...

Where on earth were these dresses when I was heading to prom?! lol

Old Hollywood is the source of inspiration yet again, this time for the glamorous looks from Badgley Mischka, even though I feel like I'm staring into a disco ball...

The longer I stare at this collection from Marchesa, the more I love it and the less I can describe it.

The drama and intricate detailing of each piece is too much for words!

It's like a dark, Spanish, Alexander McQueen dream that I don't want to wake up from!

NYFW FALL 2011: DARK & DAPPER

Playing around with the ideas of androgyny and sultriness,

New York Fashion Week took a walk on the dark side.

Ralph Lauren goes classic chic.
This collection screams old hollywood splash of androgyny in the tuxedo-esque suits, ties, and collared shirts; yet the use of shiny fabrics add just the right touch of femininity.
This fall, the chicks will be the ones wearing the pants.

Dear God,

If for some insanely bizarre reason I should be caught in a blizzard anytime soon,

PLEASE let me be in Alexander Wang to keep me cozy & chic!

I can't get enough of his parkas-turned-blazers-turned-bombers, with the perfect touch of fur.

And with the right hint of neon, I can be easily spotted by a search & rescue team if I should get lost in the middle of nowhere. ;)

NYFW FALL 2011: ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES

With us nearing the 20th anniversary of Marc Jacobs' infamous grunge collection--the one that got him fired from Perry Ellis and yet launched him into being one of the greatest designers of all time--Joesph Altuzarra couldn't have picked a better time to debut his take on teen spirit.

Rich burnt oranges and dark olives, silky satin dresses with shredded hems, and fur-frilled parkas are all diverse elements that seem to work so perfectly together.

Anyone down for a game of rugby?! lol

Rag & Bone created collection of sporty edginess that seemed to play off of those tough gals that don't mind playing with the big boys.

Scottish plaids, padded leggings, and quilted tops make this collection one for the girls who aren't afraid to play a bit rough.

So in that case, we'll leave the kilted skirts for the guys.

NAHM--a combination of initials of the brand's designers Nary Manivong and fashion heiress, Ally Hilfiger--has made quite the stir this season.

With a simple color story and tweaked sihlouettes,

this collection has the appeal and rockability for those who like dark yet chic simplicity.

I'm a huge fan of high-low hems and cool clothes, and NAHM definitely fits the bill.

My favorite part of Band of Outsiders is the layering!

With temperatures dropping to all time lows during the fall and winter seasons,

it's a relief to see that someone has us covered...literally!

Chunky knits draped over hip hugging skirts that are worn on top of pajama-like leggings and cable knit socks!?! Bring on the blizzards!

I can't even begin to tell you how amazed I am with Nicholas K's wilderness grunge looks.

Every girl that came down the runway look like she was as warm as a cabin fire, yet tough enough to tackle a grizzly...if need be. lol

Draped emerald green velvets, lumberjack plaids, and feminine ruffles = perfection!

NYFW FALL 2011: IN LIVING COLOR

Although we're still in the dreary midst of winter, the bright future of fashion for the year's end has made its way down the runways of New York City. Fall 2011 takes on a colorful twist, giving the finger to the blah mood that sunshine-less weather brings while not turning a blind eye to the furs, heavy layers, and woolen fabrics that keep us toasty.

For this year's fall season, it seems like Libertine has a bit of an obsession with graph paper, stencils, and colorful paints.

While most of us have had our share of these childhood items

at some point in our lives--whether in arts & crafts or in an uber boring math class--Libertine definitely owns the meaning of schoolhouse rock. Graphic legwear and spray-painted everything are two statements that will definitely turn heads.

I absolutely LOVE this collection from Rachel Roy!

Mrs. Doubtfire gets a makeover!

With Heidi-like braided updos, scrunched socks, cardigans and granny florals,

there's a vintage vibe that I love about these looks.

Every bit of Phillip Lim's collection is flawless.

Lightweight fabrics, chic paneled trousers, textured sleeves, and a serious punch of color.

Way to go Phil! lol

With inspiration taken from the 1960s and 70s, Milly takes classic silhouettes into the contemporary.

I think my favorite accessory accent of her collection were her use of neck scarves.

Though subtle, they add an amazing spark of color, bringing together the look in a completely new way!

While Alice + Olivia channeled the glam and boldness of the 70s,

and Araks revemped the 1950s college girl into a chic sophisticate,

both brands had color on the brain.

Carrot orange, midnight blue, and berry wine were my favorite hues in their Fall 2011 collections,

a bold mix that I never even though of but will definitely have to put to use.

I hope I'm not the only one giving the thumbs up for Alice + Olivia's piling on of the prints

and Araks's sheer skirts that add a flirtatious peek-a-boo of the legs. ;)

Everything that Victoria Beckham touches seems to be fantabulous! lol

While she stuck with simplicity this season,

I used to love to read.

I'm not sure exactly when it was that I fell out of love with it,

but I know it definitely had to do with me being in college.

Being a Creative Writing major,

both reading and writing are inevitable and inescapable....

and the fact that I want to write for a living as a fashion journalist someday allows me to predict that much of my future will be mostly spent with my head buried within a book or magazine.

Since I've been in school, reading has became such a drag.

There are sooooo many amazing stories out there,

yet due to having professors who are obsessed with the world's most uninteresting authors, lol

I've been in a reading rut...

stuck with the boring, the abstract, the overly theoretical, and the non-captivating.

My delay in posting lately has largely stemmed from the fact that I have craploads of reading to tackle.

Thank God the materials spark some part of my interest,

or else my money spent on Amazon to buy the books would be a total waste.

I don't think I'll actually be able to indulge in something of my choice until I graduate...

since most of my free time is spent dissecting class materials.

But until then,

I'll just have to deal.

As far as school goes, I have tons of reading to do...

a lot of which I'm already behind and it's only the second week of school.

For one of my classes on Ethnic Politics, my professor wants us to read one

of the three books he's assigned for us by this Thursday.

I wouldn't have much of a problem with this if I didn't have four other classes to keep up with...

plus the fact that I have A LIFE! lol

But hey, I guess that's the beauty of a multi-tasker:

making it work.

Since we're on the subject of my college life,

I found it disgustingly hilarious that in my Religious Studies class today,

my professor farted.....

TWICE!

mid lecture. lmbo!

I tried soooooo hard not to laugh,

and yet the majority of my other classmates continued to pay attention

nonchalantly, as if the woman didn't just let one loose!

The only person whose face seemed to share my disbelief

was one of the students who had just added the class.

He happened to be sitting right next to my professor,

and contained himself while putting his head down. lol

I waited for her to at least say "Excuse me,"

or even lie and say it was her shoe or the whiteboard marker....

but she just continued rambling on like her gassy mishap was non-existent.

What a way to start off the week. lol

THE HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH

While I'm sure most people spent New Years Day sleeping in

or recovering from the previous night's hangover, I was at Disneyland! lol

It's been about a year since I've last made my way to Mickey and Minnie's humble abode....

and before that, not since my high school grad night back in '07.

My sisters and I had park hopper passes, courtesy of my grandma's generous Christmas spirit.

And after tackling Disney's California Adventure {referenced as DCA by some visitors we ran into},

we spent the remainder of the day at Disneyland.

We rode as many rides as possible, watched the Christmas parade,

& seen Captain EO {which I hadn't seen since I was a kid!}

I did grow to become annoyed by all of the untamed kids

that were running all over the place like headless chickens,

and have a newfound appreciation for kiddie leashes. lol

Though I'm confident I won't have to use them for my {future} kids,

I think they are an excellent tool for everyone else's. hahah

But aside from the menacing tiny tots,

we had a blast. :)

Toy Story has to be one of the best rides in California Adventure.

We waited in line for about an hour,

and this hilarious little girl made things more than entertaining:

she kept kicking my sister Taylor in her legs. hahaha

Perhaps I love this ride so much simply because of the fact that I whooped my sister in the end.

{For those of you who don't know, the ride experience is like an interactive game,
and you ride along with your space blaster gun, shooting the various targets and winning points.}

Off to Disneyland!!! :)

It's not everyday that you see rollerskating snowflakes. lol

I thought it was extremely lame that Belle, Cinderella, Arielle, Snow White and Aurora

were the only princesses who were part of the Christmas parade.

No, not everything is about race, but C'MON DISNEY! lol

Where was Princess Jasmine and Princess Tiana??!!?

Mulan????

They could've threw in some African dancers, Simba, Mufasa, Timon & Pumba,

and had Rafiki flipping around on the float and I would've been satisfied.....

but even that didn't happen. lol

The brownest people in the whole shabang were the reindeer and gingerbread men.....

My name is Kameron, and I'm a shopaholic. lol

I need to stop shopping.

Seriously.

I know a closet full of clothes/shoes/accessories is expected

for most blogging fashionistas to have,

but unlike many of them,

I'm not down with being in debt because of my fashion obsessions.

A chill pill is definitely much needed when it comes to my spending.

And because of the fact that I don't have daddy's credit cards

{or anyone else's money for that matter} to fall back on,

I have to be smart about this shopping biz.

Paying my rent, bills, and car insurance are amongst my many expenses....

oh, and food. lol
Homelessness is NOT an option, regardless of how chic of a bum I would be. lol
Plus, it's too friggin' cold!

And with me trying to go to London for grad school next fall,

I need to clench tight every penny I've got!

When {not if} I go to London, it's going to suck to have to ship all of my stuff!

So I need to do a whole lotta downsizing in the meantime.

As far as clothing goes, I'm dunzo.

But when it comes to shoes, I can't call it completely quits until I get my paws on

some Jeffrey Campbell kicks that I've been drooling over...{Lita's preferably.}

PEACE OUT 2010!!!!

I'm so excited for 2011 and am bouncing off the walls more than

a 2 year old who's eaten a half pound bag of jellybeans! lol

Although this year has given me a hefty share of challenges, mistakes,

laughter, progressions, tears and maturations,

I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything

and have no regrets. :)

I've learned sooooo much about myself and about others,

and I'm at a place of happiness in my life that I never thought I'd achieve

at such a youthful age.

I seem to have gained a greater sense of optimism that I'm pretty sure comes from

my faith and love for the big man upstairs.

And as 2011 hits, I am aiming high and am working hard and loving even harder.

Everyday that I'm blessed with will be another lesson learned.

So rather than sitting around moping about what I could've/should've/would've done

{like most people do},

I'm gunna put up my dukes and take the new year head on.

I have to say to all of you that you all mean so much to me!

Thank you so so SO much for tuning in to my life and being the amazing audience that you are.

I'm glad that my opinions and outlook on things are something that you find

value in and I appreciate your feedback just the same.

The time to come has a lot in store

SHOPPING MADNESS

After a LONNNNG, excruciating lapse of not being able to buy anything outside of the necessary

gas for my car, pesky bills, and food for the fridge,

I was finally able to indulge in an extremely overdue shopping trip!

My roommate Brandi and I hit the mall on Wednesday.

Yet once we realized most of our money had dwindled away in only about an hour,

we made our way to one of my favorite thrift spots.

My first time at this particular thrift store was....mmmm...aiiiiight. lol

I got some pretty cool stuff,

but for some reason,

yesterday's trip was the most AMAZING experience I've ever had thrifting!

There were soooooo many items that I snatched up,

and they had tons of shoes {which was an area they were lacking in upon my first visit}.

In all, I spent 68 bucks and walked away with a huge plastic bag of goodies...

the bag was so big, I felt like I had a Quasimodo-hunch while carrying it on my back. O_o

I didn't want to bombard you all with photos of everything I got,

{primarily because it would take at least 50 snapshots lol}

so I decided to do yet another video haul!

Kev & I made our rounds to my uncle's and grandpa's house on Saturday before

heading over to his grandparent's house in L.A.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before, but Kev is Jamaican/British

{interesting combo, I know.}

and I must say this Christmas was definitely one that was too hilarious to forget.

Not because of his heritage, lol

but because I had so much fun!

his family inspired me to want to start having game nights at my apartment. lol

Gone, at 54 years old.

Fifty. Four.

That's so young...

Teena Marie is a legend.

And it seems like as the years progress, the artistic outlets that once breeded the revolutionaries, non-conformists, critical thinkers and articulate speakers are being cashed in for sex, lies, and idiot-tapes.

This is precisely why I don't listen to the radio anymore...

and I barely watch t.v., all because of the fact that there's a great lack in integrity that

artists like Teena Marie achieved.

Old school tunes are all that I listen to nowadays.

It was in those eras before my time that music was a form of

emotional release, profound intellect, and movement making.

Yet everyone is stuck on people like Miley Cyrus and Souja Boy.

O_O

Sad if you ask me.

Though I am quite young, classic artists like Teena Marie will always have a place in my heart.

And though she is gone, she will be truly missed.

I hope that people really take a look into her music as well as the countless careers of other legends that have seemed to disappear with the time, so that they know of the greatness that existed

despite what we have today.

A CALIFORNIA CHRISTMAS

Merry Christmas everyone!
Although it looks like mid-July outside here in So Cal,
the cool air snaps me back to reality. lol

I hope that all of you have a great time with your loved ones!
And though we're all lovers of gifts,
don't lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas:
sweet baby Jesus! lol

Last night, after going to the movies with Kev to see "Little Fockers" {which was hilarious by the way},
I was full of the Christmas spirit and since I was home for the holiday,
I wanted to head up into the Rancho Cucamonga hills to Thouroughbread.
The area is classically known as the neighborhood with the most ridiculously amazing
displays of Christmas lights. But since Kev somehow got us lost
after he insisted he knew where we were going,
we called it a night....
that is until we remembered that there was a house around the corner from Kevin's
that my mom told us was one-of-a-kind.

We pulled up, turned to the radio station printed on the lawn's sign post,
and the Christmas lights twinkled to the song!

ISLAND GIRL

While I've always found myself obsessing over countless vintage items I've discovered on Ebay,

it took me a while before I could actually gain the nerve to actually purchase something.

I think my apprehension was rooted in my mom's voice buzzing in my ear,

where I'd hear a mantra of her parental rants of anxiety about her concerns with online shopping scams.

But after brushing off the worry, I decided to take my chances in my purchase of a few vintage finds.

These uniquely printed Bali pants {along with two other similar pairs}

are the first Ebay additions to my closet, and I love them!

Though they are so comfy!

And even though they are far too big for me,

the trusty velcro along the waistband makes them adjustable to any size. ;)

Initially, I thought I'd only be able to wear these in the summer,

but I've definitely found much more use out of them in these cool winter months.

ON THE EDGE

Actress Kerry Washington covers the December 2010 issue of L.A Times Magazine with a look that is definitely a good way to end the year: with a BANG & an EDGE.

Kerry looks flawless.

Though there's no doubt she's gorgeous, I've never really seen her in such a fashion-forward light.
Yes, there are her usual red carpet appearances for award shows, movie premiers, galas and such,
but she always looks so reserved and well....in my opinion...old.

However, this editorial gives her just the stylish touch she needs and is quite far from matronly.

For a second, I wanted her haircut. lol

I think that was just my first impulse upon seeing her photos.

But I know that's a bit of a stretch to walk down the street every day with that particular doo,

especially in this unpredictable weather.

Being a young woman of color is something that I'm proud of...

yet I don't think I'd be so keen to have a frizzy mess on top of my head if it suddenly decided to rain.

I'd probably end up looking like this....

...minus the mushroom. lol

All in all, I'm quite pleased with her feature,

considering the fact that I nearly had a heart attack over her last look.

With a closet, drawers, & massive Rubbermaid containers jammed-packed with clothes,

I'm still one of those types that has the audacity to say "I have nothing to wear." lol

My indecisiveness is a weakness of mine,

yet at the same time, it's probably the root of my personal style.

I go through this process just about every day when it comes to finding something to wear.
Most times, everything ends up on the floor, and I end up with Mt. Rushmore.
Not to sound like a slob, but I haven't washed clothes for a good month until yesterday...
and yet I still have a plethora of options in the never-ending abyss known as my closet.
Ridiculous, I know.

But being that I haven't shopped in what seems like AGES,

I've been simply making the best out of what I've already got.

PINKY PROMISE

I'm a huge fan of bending the rules of fashion . . .

especially when it comes to gender. lol

And I randomly noticed that there's been a revolution of sorts surrounding the color pink.

I used to hate wearing it, simply because of the fact that it was usually associated with

the ditzy "like ohmygosh"-ness of chicks like Elle Woods,

which is a pretty narrow connotation for the color to supposedly be the definitive mark of females,

aside from our obvious vaginas. lol

Considering those of us who aren't

constantly flipping our hair, calling our close friends "darling,"

or have dogs cooped up in our purses,

I can say that the world of fashion has added a bit more of an edge to the feminine hue.

And after sifting through my laptop's massive photo collection,

I've found that perhaps pink isn't so bad after all.

Though it may not be your typical Thanksgiving feast...it's NAOMI for Pete's sake!Desert anyone? lol

The holidays are my favorite time of year because of the good food {of course} and good times spent with my family & friends.I can rant and rave for hours on end about what I'm thankful for, and among that lengthy list, I have to add my deep appreciation for all of YOU!, my faithful, fashion-savvy readers! :)All of you are amazing and I am so grateful for all of your support!
This Thanksgiving in particular has been a huge blessing simply due to the fact that I've gone through SO much this past year and have managed to overcome so many obstacles leading up to this day.And though I know the struggles of life are just beginning,I'm glad this year has helped me build up a tough skin for what's to come.So 2011: bring it on! lol

INDIGO CHARLIE

We all know that I'm a sucker for the rarities within fashion, art, and music that shy away from the norm.

And one of these trendsetters is upcoming singer/songwriter, Indigo Charlie.

Aside from her funky style and her look--as she sports a full head of kinky curls--that will make it easy for you to spot her out of a crowd, what sets Indigo Charlie apart from the rest is her unique voice.

On my first listen to her debut single "Never Change," I wasn't sure what to expect.

But being that I've found myself listening to the song over and over,

it's obvious that I'm sold. lol

Though she's a student at the Los Angeles FIDM campus, Indigo Charlie has her hands full...

considering the fact that she's also the personal assistant to Solange Knowles. The indie musician is definitely on the right track and is hunting for a label to call home.

I wish her much success and hope that this is not the last of her,

but only the beginning.

THE SCIENTIST

Out of sheer boredom, Kevin and I decided to act on our big kid tendencies and took a trip to the OC's Discovery Science Center. I hadn't been since grade school, and since Kev never experienced the wonders of Einsteinish experiments, we knew this would be one intriguing adventure.

Though we were unsuccessful in the Dino Quest scavenger hunt because we couldn't find a stupid Camarasaurus fossil, the Science Center wasn't as fulfilling as Chuck E. Cheese's, but definitely a place where a kid can be a kid.

This past weekend, I got to flex my styling skills alongside my

photographer friend Stella Simona.

I brought tons of clothes and accessories,

but ended up using only a few pieces...

which comes with the territory of being a stylist.

Our model, Noelle, was gorgeous and moved effortlessly,

which made our jobs much easier since the shoot was set on a ballet theme.

Stella and I will definitely have more collaborations to come!

CHEAPSKATE

Due to my recent case of unemployment, my freedom to shop is on a hiatus. A few weeks ago, I made a trip down to a local thrift shop in San Bernardino that lots of my friends were ranting & raving about, and came up on tons of great items! The store had shopping carts for Pete's sake! So that was a definite sign that I was going to pack it with as much as I could. Everything I purchased was no more than one to three bucks.....and I spent about $70 total.

Thanks to my vintage excavation, I'm all set for the winter. And though I still have a burning desire to snag tons of items from NastyGal, H&M, and Topshop, I'm forced to succumb to the twitches and shakes that come along with shopping withdrawls since I now have to simply work with all that I've already got. If anything, I guess I'm embracing this challenge because it allows my creativity to run wild in reinventing pieces that I already have lying around! lol

Though I'm not a huge fan of the dark depths that goth tends to venture into, here's a twisted love inside of me for editorials--like this one--that manage to showcase the beauty of femininity with an edge. Photographer Zhang Jingna captures model Denise {from Photogenics} in "Before the Tide Comes," which is very remniscent of Edward Scissorhands--minus the deadly fingertips. By the looks of the straps & buckled bondage, I'd say this is a story about a despaired woman who has been exiled to the middle of nowhere due to her S&M obsessions. lol That may be a bit far fetched,

but to me, it makes complete sense. ;)

While I used to be a fan of rampaging houses for candy and coming up with crazy costumes,

NO DAY BUT TODAY

I'm just now getting over the soreness that had overcome my body after

participating in THE longest journey on foot....aka the L.A. Aids Walk.

It was a no-brainer to support such a powerful movement with the crew:

Chelsea, Keek, Bree, Sulem, and Krystlasia

We walked a good 2 miles to get there--after taking the metro and the bus--,

walked 6 miles amongst more than 30,000 people,

then walked 2 more just to get to the car. lol

And, it was raining.

But all in all, it was for a good cause and I had blast with my girls.

Plus, we rewarded ourselves by indulging a hearty meal from

Roscoe's afterwards. ;]

The discovery of genuine friends is a special rarity that comes with life.

Though my circle is not the biggest,

I'd rather have a few good friends than tons of...

the flakey ones,

the backstabbing ones,

the always-borrowing-your-clothes-and-never-giving-em-back ones,

the boyfriend stealers,

the tell-your-secrets-to-the-world-and-might-as-well-start-a-blog-or-

write-a-book-about-what-everyone-doesn't-know-about-you ones,

the swagger jackers,

the liars,

the thieves,

the always-want-what-you-have-yet-are-unwilling-to-go-out-

and-do-something-for-themselves ones,

the bad advice givers,

the snobs,

the always-crying-broke-when-you-ask-to-borrow-a-few-dollars-

even-though-you-always-help-them-when-they-need-it ones,

and the

the floozies.

I'm so thankful that God has plucked out all of the weeds in my life and has sewn seeds that are blossoming into amazing friendships with beautiful people.

I love my posse,

my ride-or-die-

always-stick-by-my-side peeps.

I adore them all because they are each very different yet are all extremely talented,

intelligent, and bring something new to my life in their own little ways.

One of these fab friends of mine is Chelsea, better known as Danni Rouge.

Though I had an obsession with redheads far before we met,

she's the dopest one I know. lol

She's the designer behind the accessory line Bullets&Bows,

and is an uber-talented singer and songwriter.

She recently did a vid covering Bruno Mars' song "Grenade,"

which I never heard prior to hearing her sing it and now I love it! lol

Soooo I love Willow Smith. lol

I didn't really understand what all of the hype was about surrounding her,

but after watching her highly-anticipated vid for her single "Whip My Hair,"

I've officially hopped aboard the Willow train lol

Not only is her swagger out of this world

--especially considering the fact that she's 9 years old--

but she's just so friggin' cute! lol

The entire time I was watching the video, I kept getting flashbacks of Jada and her dookeybraids in her Menace to Society days.

I'm so thrilled to see such a positive role model for young black girls.

Finally the days of looking up to rump-shakin' video vixens and risqué female entertainers

are OVER!

Now, black girls have someone that they can actually relate

to that promotes embracing and celebrating your individuality.

I really hope that Willow doesn't become a product of the industry like Miley or Britney lol

So I'll stand in her corner until she shows otherwise.

Aaah! This little girl is just too dope for words!

MAXIMILIAN

I've officially claimed winter as my favorite season of the year.

Aside from the good grub that Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners bring,

I'm in love with this cold weather.

It definitely beats sweating in places that I never thought I could. lol

Although here in Riverside, the temperatures seem to be onboard

an unpredictable roller coaster of highs one day and lows the next,

the cool breeze tease has been short-lived yet so refreshing.

And on these days that I am able to pile on the layers,

my obsession with maxi dresses has flared up now more than ever.

While they're typically a summertime item,

I have much greater use for them at this time of year because I love vamping up

pieces that are typically meant for simplicity.

And thanks to the local Goodwill, I've managed to snag some dresses that

have winter rockability written all over them.

Since I've been pouring most of my money into my line

and not into my closet,

I've figured out new ways to wear old things.

There's nothing better than rocking something you've had

for what seems to be decades,

and managing to twist it in a way that you've never thought of before.

Key terms: utilize and maximize!!!!

I always have trouble getting rid of stuff because my mind

recites a repeating mantra of

"This ____ has potential" or "I'm gunna sew this into a ____.".....

which is why my closet remains full of things I simply can't let go of.

Though I've been contemplating whether or not I'm going to

start an online store to rid myself once and for all

of the things I've never/barely worn,

until then, I'll try my hand at making old things look new.

And with me being a fan of piling denim on top of denim,

this is what I came up with. lol

I'm in my new apartment! lol

My best friend Brandi & I have been here for about a month now

and we're trying our best to get used to it.

It's not that we don't get along

{because she's probably one of the ONLY people in this world that I could live with}

it's just that the management of the apartment complex.....sucks! lol

From having our water shut off almost every week

to ant infestations,

the last month has been quite ridiculous.

Aside from that mayhem,

there's the usual madness in my life--better known as college--

along with working on my line.

Though I have found a sample maker,

I'm starting to get worried because I'm not sure if he's actually started on my pieces!

The bright side is that I found an amazing photographer & make up artist

for my A/W lookbook;

HOWEVER,

what good is a lookbook without any clothes?! lol

I'm realizing now more than ever that for a young designer doing everything on her own,

it's a hard-knock life.

I'm praying to God that all of my hard work won't result in complete failure,

so I'm going to remain optimistic and keep my eyes on the prize.
